Frederick Douglass and President Lincoln shaking hands during their second meeting in 1864. Their cooperation to end the Civil War was kept a secret at the time. Widow Mary Todd Lincoln gifted her husband’s favorite walking stick to Douglass as a sign of thanks for his service to the her husband and to the nation.
