In his lectures and books, Douglass recounted immediately liking President Lincoln upon meeting him in 1864. At the time, Douglass would have been considered a conspiracy theorist, and so their meeting and cooperation to end the Civil War was kept a secret. Douglass' opinions of Lincolns decisions regarding the abolition of slavery burned hot and cold at times, but the overall potential for a lasting friendship is found in his writings.

To read Douglass' experience that inspired this sculpture, read "The Life and Times of Frederick Douglass."
