The protection of Freedom of Speech in the First Amendment of the American Constitution made it possible for Frederick Douglass to publish newspapers and autobiographical books that pushed for the complete abolishment of slavery. The North Star Commons is named after his first newspaper.
It is highly advised to read the "The Life and Times of Frederick Douglass." It is his last autobiography that provides an excellent overview of his memories as an enslaved person in American, path to Freedom, his involvement in ending the Civil War and varied experiences of American politics.
He is heart felt eloquence makes him one of the great leaders of the American Freedom Movement.
